Combine your feeds into one

One of the disadvantages of using different services to publish your contents (photos in Flickr, links in del.icio.us, posts in your blog, your status in Twitter, ...) is that you force your followers to subscribe to various feeds to track you.

A good way to solve it is to create a unique feed that combines all of them. It's strange I could not find any specific service that permits it without too much hassle. Anyway, I've found Yahoo Pipes works well enough as a feed combinator so here we go:

  1. Create an account in Yahoo (if you already use any of its services you already have one)

  2. In Yahoo Pipes create a new pipe that fetches all your feeds (Fetch Feed) and combines them (Union). I also reorder the result by publication date (Sort) though I'm not sure if it is needed. Check mine to see a working example.

  3. Make sure it works correctly (notice you have a debugger) and publish it so as anybody can use it. You will find the feed URL in its info page (Subscribe → Get as RSS).

Because the future is uncertain, you may want to use an URL that masks the Yahoo's one, so you will be able to change "the engine" behind the feed without disturbing your subscribers. I use Apache's proxy for this, FeedBurner may be a good solution too.

Well, I really came to talk about my global feed, and so you'll find it at the footer of this page. Enjoy it!
